Sweet Chaos

Arudran Prabhakaran

Chaos can be destructive, dangerous, and scary; it can harm lives and scar us. But there’s a different kind of chaos. One that brings laughter and smiles to our faces, a type of chaos that we’ve all probably experienced. And an instance of this harmless chaos happened to me, my brother, and my cousins. We were scrambling around the kitchen, grabbing flour, cinnamon, sugar, and everything that we needed to make a small loaf of banana bread. And while we didn’t necessarily need a camera and a tripod, they certainly helped capture that crazy day.

One by one mistakes started piling up. It started with my brother, slowly but surely pouring almost the entire bottle of cinnamon into a ½ cup. Why, you may ask? A simple misread of the instructions; he read ½ a tablespoon as ½ a cup. We were able to (thankfully) stop him from pouring the spice into the bowl. Additionally, while pouring in dry ingredients, we put in baking soda, not baking powder, which wasn’t really good.

Then came the sugar. After our previous mix-up with the cinnamon, we decided to bake in a more “efficient” way; someone would get the measuring cups, someone would get the ingredients, and so on. And no one could find the sugar. We kept yelling at each other, “Where’s the sugar! Where’s the sugar!”, until finally we found it, all the while the camera recording our confusion. And the sweet disorder didn’t end there. While we poured it in, a giant clump fell out, spilling onto my cousin's pants and scattered on the floor. But perhaps the biggest mistake of all was at the end, during baking. After taking out of the oven, we took a slice and ate, hoping to taste delectable notes of nuts and the sweet taste of bananas. But that’s not what we got; all we got was a thick, doughy taste. It didn’t bake properly.

The banana bread didn’t come out as well as we expected, though it shouldn’t be a surprise given all of our mistakes. And, despite the outcomes of all of these things, they made memories that will stick with us forever.
